The induced pluripotent stem (iPS: Induced pluripotent stem cells) can be obtained in vitro from skin fibroblasts and from other somatic cell division, introducing specific genes or gene products that reprogram the somatic cell nucleus matures. The most common protocols used viral vectors to transfer four specific genes (Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-MYC).   • images95This study published in Cancer Research reflects one of the group’s main lines of James and Miguel Abal Reventós at the Institut de Recerca de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron, conducted in collaboration with the Hospital del Mar de Barcelona. Specifically, it deals with the characterization of molecular alterations associated with endometrial cancer. In particular, this paper identifies a possible mechanism by which tumor cells are restricted to endometrial tissue, initiate the invasion of adjacent tissue, myometrium.

    The overexpression of the transcription factor protease active ERM/ETV5 extracellular matrix, MMP2, and promotes invasiveness of tumor cells. The reversal of effect using small interfering RNA (siRNA), the generation of more aggressive tumors in an orthotopic animal model and correlation in clinical samples, confirming this mechanism as a key at the beginning of invasion in endometrial cancer .

    This step of tumor confined to the tissue in which invasive tumor is generated is one of the key processes in the dissemination and metastasis in any type of tumor. In endometrial cancer, this initial stage of invasion is highly clinically relevant difference because, generally speaking, a satisfactory response to surgery in the case of confined disease and the need for adjuvant therapy in the case of infiltrating tumor. Also in relation to the prognosis of the patient and the appearance of recurrences, myometrial infiltration is a factor. Thus, knowledge of the mechanisms associated with this initial stage of the process of metastasis will allow future characterization of markers for better staging of patients and identifying potential therapeutic targets aimed at the beginning of the infiltration and dissemination.
